Getting up in Sup is easy, the principle of stand up paddle is to row standing on a board but you still have to go from lying down to standing.
- First of all, place the board in the water, on either side.
- Lie on it with the paddle under you, the blade at the torso and the handle pointing forward.
- Row in surfer position away from the edge.
- Grab the paddle in one hand and get on your knees, right in the centre of the board, not too far forward or too far back.
- Before getting up, place the paddle perpendicular to the board, grabbing it with both hands.
- Lift one knee, then the other. Spread your feet wide and use the paddle to help you maintain your balance (like a tightrope walker).
- You can also go from kneeling to standing in one go.
- Finally, look far ahead to maintain balance. Especially avoid fixing your eyes on the board in a slightly bent position. It is there, and it’s not going anywhere.
